Case study: how a 2.5-year tank inspection programme finished in 18 months

LONDON, 2 October 2026. TickAudit has published the full case study of the Scottish Water chemical tank inspection programme, delivered by Ross-Shire Engineering (RSE). It is the programme behind the figures on our homepage, and the first in a series of customer stories we will publish over the coming weeks.

What the programme involved

RSE was engaged by Scottish Water to carry out visual inspections and non-destructive testing of chemical storage tanks across a large number of remote water treatment sites. Every inspection and test needed a formal report in the inspection contractor’s specified format, delivered to Scottish Water. Many of the sites had no data signal, and the programme had to remove paper as far as possible.

Before TickAudit, each report took between half an hour and two and a half hours to write up by hand, back in the office, from notes taken on site.

What changed

Engineers completed inspections and tests in the TickAudit app, online or offline, with GPS position, timestamp and photographic evidence captured at the point of work. Reports were generated automatically in the required format and transferred to Scottish Water without manual handling. Tanks needing remedial action were flagged as soon as the inspection was logged.

The results

  • 2,048 tanks inspected
  • 2,259 reports generated automatically, without manual compilation
  • 4,000 reporting hours eliminated
  • $1M+ in reported client savings
  • Delivered in 18 months against a 2.5-year estimate: a full year early

These are reported outcomes from a single client programme. The case study explains what each figure measures and how it was arrived at.

“A tank inspection in Scotland and a vessel inspection in Singapore are different jobs under different regulators, but the discipline underneath is identical: capture the record properly at the moment the work is done, or spend the next two years arguing about what happened.”

Gerald Peoples, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, TickAudit

RSE’s own view of the programme is on the case study page: “$1M+ saved across the programme by eliminating thousands of admin hours.”

Why we are publishing it now

The physical world runs on trust. We think it should run on proof. Publishing the programme in full, with the method behind each figure, is how we hold ourselves to that. More customer stories follow in the coming weeks, starting with a rope access contractor three years paperless on site.
