Scottish Water Tank Inspection Programme
Ross-Shire Engineering for Scottish Water
2,048 chemical tanks inspected across remote sites, 2,259 reports generated automatically, and a 2.5-year programme delivered in 18 months.
The programme
Ross-Shire Engineering (RSE) was engaged by Scottish Water to carry out detailed visual inspections and non-destructive testing (NDT) of chemical storage tanks across a large number of remote water treatment sites. The inspections and NDT were performed by a global testing, inspection and certification contractor, and every inspection and test required a formal report.
Before the programme, inspections were recorded on paper on site and written up manually back in the office. Producing a single report by hand took anywhere from half an hour to two and a half hours.
The challenge
As the work was being delivered for a public utility, RSE was required to remove paper from the programme as far as possible. That set the requirements for a digital solution:
- It had to work with or without a data signal, because many of the sites had no coverage.
- It had to be intuitive, quick and accurate for the engineers using it in the field.
- Reports had to follow the standard formats specified by the inspection contractor.
- Report generation had to be automated, removing costly manual write-up.
- Finished reports had to reach Scottish Water automatically.
The solution
RSE mandated TickAudit for the visual inspections and NDT across the programme’s inspection supply chain. TickAudit built the inspection and testing templates with the contractor so they were quick to complete in the field and captured everything each report format required.
- Offline-first capture. Engineers completed inspections and tests in the TickAudit mobile app whether or not a signal was available. Data synchronised automatically once a connection returned.
- Evidence built in. Every inspection carried a timestamp, GPS position and photographic evidence, captured at the point of work.
- Automated reporting. Custom report templates turned the captured data into PDF reports in the contractor’s specified format, generated automatically and available on the TickAudit dashboard.
- Automatic delivery. Completed reports were transferred to Scottish Water without manual handling, and tanks needing remedial action were flagged immediately.
The results
The programme was estimated at two and a half years. It was completed in 18 months, a full year early.
| Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|
| 2,048 tanks inspected | The number of chemical tanks that underwent visual and non-destructive test inspection over the programme. |
| 2,259 reports generated automatically | Every inspection and test required a formal report. All 2,259 were produced from the captured data, without manual compilation. |
| 4,000 reporting hours eliminated | Manual write-up previously took between half an hour and two and a half hours per report. Across 2,259 reports, automated generation removed around 4,000 hours of reporting work. |
| $1M+ reported client savings | The saving in administration and reporting costs across the full programme, as reported by the client. |
| Delivered a year early | 18 months against a 2.5-year estimate. |
These are reported outcomes from a single client programme.
What changed for the programme
- Paper was removed from the inspection process.
- Data capture during inspection and testing was quick and accurate.
- Every inspection and test carried timestamped, GPS-linked, photographic evidence.
- Programme data was available in real time for review, not weeks later.
- Reports reached Scottish Water automatically.
- Tanks requiring remedial action were flagged as soon as the inspection was logged.
